June Q+A

Hey friends,

Today I am answering some of the questions that were recently submitted to me on Instagram. I'm going to be doing these monthly or bimonthly (depending on the kind and amount of questions I receive).  Please send me your questions either in the comments or via email for next month.  Ask me about life, yoga, health, wellness, beach life, photography, or anything else!

Here we go...

The 30A Life Cover + Weekend Thoughts

Hey friends!  Happy Friday!

I am so excited to share that my photo (and Ellie the Bug) is on the cover of the latest issue of The 30A Life!  You can see the issue here online or pick up a copy around the 30A area.  I've been wanting to share this with you all since I first saw the cover a few days ago.  It's really a cool feeling as I watch where my photography takes me... Where will I be this time next year?

Less Options = More Creativity

Earlier this winter, I decided to sell an extra camera body, 4 lenses, and several other accessories.  Since I had first gotten into photography, I had a huge wish list, and the mentality that I needed more and more to be a good photographer.  Obviously my equipment is important, but something had shifted in me as I began to focus on my creativity and expression rather than what gear I had. I realized, a good photographer or artist really only needs the basic tools to create magic.  How could I use what I already had to create an image in mind?  This has put me up in trees and in all sorts of strange places to get a certain shot.  Some of my most like photos were created this way.

The Dark Side of Social Media

Hey friends,

A few months ago I wrote all about why I love Instagram.  I got a mixed response to the post.  Some people loved the positive outlook.  Other people sent me messages that they still struggle with the "dark side" of social media... the jealousy, comparison, and all around fake-ness.  It's easy to place your worth on the number of followers you have and the likes you receive.  I get it.

Pedego 30A

Last month I met up with Pedego 30A in Watercolor, Florida for a really fun lifestyle shoot.  Pedego makes electric bikes, and you can rent or buy them at their shop in Watercolor.  I totally want one now.  They come in pretty colors (I may or may not have mentioned that the aqua blue one was my "soul color"), and you can ride them like a normal bike, or turn them on for a boost while cruising.  Be sure to check them out when you're in town!

Mommy, Me, & the Sea

Last week I got to hang out with Janie and McCarty during one of the most gorgeous evenings on the beach to celebrate McCarty's third birthday! These two have such an amazingly playful and loving relationship.  The sky was incredible, and as you'll see below, they soaked up every moment of it.

Family's First Beach Vacation

Last month, I had the pleasure of doing a lifestyle shoot with the LaVoie family when they vacationed here in 30A.  It was their first beach vacation since having their two daughters, and therefore, this shoot was extra special for me to do.  It was a hot and sunny day.  We met at Grayton Beach State Park

Surfin 30A

I've felt a calling to surf ever since I was a kid.  My father and uncles were big time surfers in the 60s and 70s.  My dad went on to wind surfing, and then took up waterskiing when we moved up to the mountains.  So I grew up on skis, which is so awesome in itself, but I think that itch to surf is somewhere embedded in my DNA.  I'm drawn to the surf lifestyle, and feel deeply connected to the ocean, glassy waves, and all things beach.

I Bit Off More than I Can Chew

Well, I certainly bit off more than I can chew...

Last week, I shared all about the flamingo experience I had here as well as on Instagram + Facebook.  I mentioned that prints were available, thinking maybe a few people would want to buy some.  I received over 100 inquiries within the first two days, and they keep coming in.

Rare Flamingos in NW Florida

I am SO beyond excited to share my photos and recent experience.  Flamingos are here in NW Florida!!!  Let me rewind...

Last week we had tropical storm Cindy come through the area.  It rained for days.  I was scrolling on Facebook, and happened to come across this story.  How cool that a pair of flamingos were so close to where I live!?  If only they had come a little further east and they'd be in my neighborhood.  No one seems to know where they came from...

30A Unicorn Light

Happy Tuesday!

Last night I bought tons of food for a dinner picnic on the beach; however, we were so hungry that we couldn't wait and loaded up first, and then packed super light for the beach (aka camera and two towels). Bonus: We had dinner number two when we got home!

The beach was absolutely magical last night.

June Update and What's Next

It's been way too long since I shared on here, and I will not say it's because I've been too busy.  For awhile I tried to really plan out the content on my blog, but that was hard for me.  I'm not a planner.  I prefer to write about whatever is on my mind, and these days there is a lot, maybe too much, going on upstairs.  I found that my emotional state didn't always match what I was supposed to be writing about.  Things just kind of unraveled, but with that said, I will be back to two blog posts a week starting now, and I'll be sharing whatever I feel like.  Sounds good?

Here is what I've been up to...

Chiringos Photoshoot

Happy Monday! How was everyone's weekend? We had a low key weekend here. We spent a lot of time outside, and enjoyed our beautiful weather. It was so nice to take it easy, and have no plans. I definitely need to plan for no plans even more. ;)

Last week, I had the opportunity to shoot at Chiringos in Grayton Beach, FL...

Prop Magic

Never underestimate the magic of a prop!

One thing that I cannot stand in the world of portraits are overly staged and posed photos.  They don't look natural to me.  Toddlers don't just sit pretty.  I want to see their little personalities shining through in the photos. I also want to see a family interacting, smiling, kissing, or whatever it may be in a way that is real and genuine.

I usually avoid props because they feel fake.  Big mistake.

Meditation Behind the Camera

Yesterday evening, I was headed out to do a shoot.  I dropped Bodie off with his dad, and drove off to a super secret location.  I actually found parking.  I set up the tripod, switched the lens on my camera, and turned it on.  The memory card icon flashed.  Crap.  I left the card in my computer.  The sunlight was a beautiful golden color, and I couldn't take one shot!

So I packed up and left.  I wish I could tell you I simply brushed it off
